Screening Tools for Asperger's Syndrome There are two instruments publicly available for screening individuals with Asperger's Syndrome. The first, developed by Dr. Tony Attwood, is the Australian Scale for Asperger's Syndrome. This instrument, as of yet, does not provide a quantitative score. It is, however, undergoing a revision by Dr. Attwood to this end. It is intended for children of primary school age (grades K through 8). The second instrument is the Childhood Asperger Syndrome Test (CAST), developed by Dr. Simon Baron-Cohen at Cambridge University in the United Kingdom. A cut-off score of 15 was considered to successfully predict Asperger's Syndrome in 50 percent of 1925 children rated. The CAST can be completed by parents and/or teachers. An important caveat: Screening instruments are not tests or diagnostic instruments. They are used to guide and inform individuals as to the potential risk for Asperger's Syndrome. If in doubt, follow through with a formal diagnostic process with healthcare professionals expert in the area of autism spectrum disorders. |
